The project
The house holds its own, without ever raising its voice.

Perched on a hilltop in Tallai on the Gold Coast, Obsidian is not a home that apologises for its ambition. Commissioned to a brief of "modern, gothic, European," the residence trades soft coastal curves for something sharper; dramatic pitched forms and a material palette built to last.

Delivering that vision took more than construction expertise from Lucian Constructions. It took careful, patient project leadership from day one.
When Lucian Constructions was engaged, the site required immediate stabilisation. Working closely with Ryan of Hinterland Design Co., the team took an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) approach, bringing design and construction expertise together from the outset rather than treating them as separate steps. Together, they worked through the design, the structural implications, and a detailed approval process with the council and certifiers, a genuine collaboration that laid the foundation for everything that followed.

That same collaborative approach carried through construction, involving careful sequencing, hands-on problem solving, and tight coordination throughout. It's this early involvement that let an ambitious design get built to the standard it deserved.

The result is a home built around how this family actually lives. Rather than a generic set of rooms, Obsidian was designed around the client's own interests. A dedicated photography studio, a snooker room, a private gym, an elevated office, and a pool integrated directly into the building's form rather than set apart from it. Tim describes it as unlike any home he's built before, a forever home shaped entirely around its owners.

For Tim Bradshaw and the Lucian Constructions team, Obsidian is a case study in how the business operates, pairing hands-on construction expertise with genuine project leadership to see an ambitious brief through from start to finish, without compromise.

It's the kind of project that reflects what Lucian Constructions aims for on every build, highly custom, personally driven homes shaped entirely around the family who will live in them. As the business continues to take on ambitious, design-led projects across the board, Obsidian stands as a clear marker of the standard that clients, designers and architects alike can expect when partnering with Lucian Constructions.

What early involvement changed
The details held because the conversations happened early.
01
Structural review
A clearer route through the technical questions before construction placed limits on the solution.
02
Build sequencing
A staged, deliberate site strategy that made space for precision without losing momentum.
03
Material detail
A joined-up approach to the thresholds, textures, and finishes that give the home its depth.
